Social contact is often a neglected area in people’s care and recovery, perhaps because there is an assumption that it is a matter for the individual. However, it can play an important part in maintaining wellbeing. Studies have shown that often people with severe mental illness feel excluded from social networks and a reduced social life. This is contrary to recovery as social contact helps build up self-confidence, support networks and can lead towards empowerment and self-motivation.
