LEARN TO LIVE WELL
A comprehensive overview of mental health issues and ways to manage them.
This is a 12-week course designed to incorporate our most popular groups as a whole. The emphasis will be on developing the confidence and skills to explore management of anxiety-based states and depression-related signs and feelings.
The course will be facilitated by the Adult Recovery College facilitators with input from our Counselling Service, Peer Support and our colleagues at Move Ahead.
What is involved?
The expectation is that by the end of the course you will:
- Have a fuller awareness and understanding of your mental health needs.
- Have developed some skills in management of anxiety and depression with links to further development and skills for mental health management.
- Identified your individual strengths and how you can harness them.
- Have an awareness and understanding of resilience and confidence building
Session 1
Pre-course meeting. Registered participants will meet with facilitators and discuss expectations and the commitment required.
Session 2
Our inherited negative mind. The power of our unhelpful thinking. How this inherited trait makes life troublesome for us. Introduction to the concept of A.C.T. and psychological flexibility.
Session 3
The Polyvagal Theory and how this impacts the mind/body in anxiety. Learning the physical and psychogical impact of our brain chemistry. How to manage the Polyvagal response.
Session 4
A cognitive approach to managing uncomfortable feelings.
Session 5
Psychological approach to anxiety and mood. A counselling approach.
Session 6
The observing self, acceptance and self-compassion.
Session 7
Mindfulness – the benefits and practice.
Session 8
Mind and body working together. A sophrological approach to mental health and well-being.
Session 9
What is confidence and how can I become more confident? Values and self- perception.
Session 10
How to manage mental health issues. Tips, plans, etc such as keeping a journal, positive affirmations, looking after yourself.
Session 11
Questions and answers. What do you need to do? What do you want to do? How is change managed?
Session 12
Sum up, recap and overview of the course. Your chance to give us feedback.
Please note that our courses are subject to a minimum number of sign-ups, if we do not receive the minimum number of sign-ups unfortunately the group will be cancelled.
You will be emailed a Wellbeing Form which must be completed before you start the course.
Please let us know at the earliest available opportunity if you no longer wish to attend the group and we can give your space to someone on our waiting list.
