What to expect with Couple Counselling
- Initial Assessment – we begin with individual sessions to understand each partner’s perspective. This allows us to gain insight into the relationship’s dynamics before working together as a couple.
- Joint and Individual Sessions – depending on your needs, we may recommend a combination of joint and individual sessions to help you navigate sensitive issues effectively. Our counsellors maintain an impartial perspective, facilitating open and productive conversations.
- Building Skills for Lasting Change – your counsellor will encourage you to practice communication techniques, set goals and complete ‘homework’ between sessions to reinforce positive changes.
- Timing of Sessions – your sessions will be weekly but may move to fortnightly after a period of time to give you longer to practice skills at home. The sessions will last 50 minutes.
Each session costs £50.
All of our couple counsellors are trained to a minimum of diploma level in counselling, have also had further training in couples counselling, and have a minimum of 1.5 hours of supervision a month to support them.
They are all members of BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) or a similar organisation.
Regular attendance at counselling sessions is an important part of the commitment you make to rebuilding your relationship with your partner.
We know that it is sometimes necessary to cancel or change appointments due to circumstances beyond your control, however, we ask that you notify us as least 24 hours in advance of any change wherever possible.
Any appointments cancelled without giving a minimum of 24 hours notice will be charged at the full rate.
Missing appointments by simply not turning up is disrespectful to your counsellor and costs Mindspace time and money, therefore the full payment will be due for that session.
If you cancel your appointment late or do not attend your sessions twice, your sessions will end unless there are extenuating circumstances. This is to avoid negatively impacting other people on our waiting list who need our support.
Confidentiality is upheld in couple sessions, except in cases of child protection or safety concerns. Information shared during individual sessions remains confidential, unless it pertains to or impacts the relationship. In such cases the counsellor will be unable to hold confidentiality and if you disagree with sharing something pertinent to the relationship the joint sessions will end.
The Mindspace Counselling Service is an organisational member of the professional body the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). All Mindspace counsellors work within the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s Ethical Framework.
